Ascent Trip ReportThis was my second attempt to reach the summit of Baker Mountain. The first time I hiked the gated road to the communication towers, but there were men high in the towers servicing them. My wife, Geri, and I did not feel comfortable trying to sneek past them and they had already spotted us from their lofty position. We would have tried to access the summit from the nice county park adjacent to the gated road, but it was closed the last time I was here. Fortunately, this time it was open. The park has many trails and one is paved, but the park boundary does not include the summit of Baker Mountain. If you want to claim this highpoint, you will have to hike on an old road beyond the park boundary at the eastern gazebo overlook with a sign reading, "Trail Closed." From here it is only a few hundred yards to the actual summit and you don't have to sneek past the communication towers to do it. You only have to sneek on the "Trail Closed" road! Sadly, due to budget cuts, the park was only open Friday-Monday in 2011. I located summit benchmark "No. 3," but there is no vista on this highpoint due to the trees. The best view is back at the gazebo in Bakers Mountain Park.
