Ascent Trip Report

September 25, 2011
Arrived at the Adirondak Loj at 9:45 and by 10:05, Lil-Yeti, The Red Goat, Eti and myself were headed down the Van Hoevenberg Trail with the days plan to summit Table Top and Phelps.
This is our first hike from the Loj and we are anxious to hike the long Van Hoevenberg Trail that we will be using a few more times in our quest to visit all the 4000 footers here in the Adirondacks. The first part of the trail was very busy with many headed out for a days hike and many more headed in, full packed after a night or two of camping. Since Irene took out the dam and the bridge we needed to cross Marcy Brook in two sections. The water was pretty high due to yesterday’s rain, but after observing fellow hikers cross, some doing the ‘go for it’ rock-hop, and others took the slower, let’s think about this way, we chose to do the let’s think about this way. The first crossing went very well, the second was OK, but the last rock hop was a team effort to get Lil-Yeti and myself across. The Red Goat and Eti decided they would stay on the safe side of the river and did some more leisurely hiking the rest of the day. Other than the brook crossing the walk to Marcy Dam was quick and easy and we arrived at 11:05, signed the next trail register and off we went toward Table Top.
We reached the Phelps Trail head at 11:35, but the plan was to go to the further summit and catch this summit on our return trip.
At the junction of the Table Top herd path, Lil-Yeti and I contemplated altering our plans for the day. The weather was gorgeous, much better than the cloudy day they had predicted, and so instead of doing Table Top and Phelps, we thought we’d do Marcy instead. In the end we decided to stick with our plan and at 12:15 we headed up the (running water) path toward Table Top. Wow, things really slowed down here, lots of twisting and turning and in the lower sections there was running water most of the time. We hoped that it would soon stop, which it did eventually, but now the trail was a thick wet muddy mess! At one point Lil-Yeti got her foot stuck in between two large boulders. She had to take her foot out of the shoe and with both hands yanking I finally got her shoe free! We arrived at the summit of Table Top at1:15 where we met up with a family who helped us identify the mountains across the valley. The views were limited and we were told the views from Phelps were much nicer so after a quick lunch and some pictures, Lil-Yeti and I started the slog through the mud and headed back down to the Van Hoevenberg Trail.
We reached the Phelps trail at 2:50 and started the rather steep climb to the summit. We were very glad to get some gorgeous views as we approached the summit. The trail was much drier than the one up to Table Top, but here too Lil-Yeti got trapped, this time by a “Yeti Leg Trap”, very cleverly disguised as exposed roots! Although I needed to push the roots apart, this time she didn’t need to take off her shoe to get out! We enjoyed the summit all to ourselves on this gorgeous afternoon, but because it was getting late and it’s a school night we couldn’t stay long and so after some snacks and more pictures we headed down at 4:05.
We arrived at Marcy Dam at 5:20 and Lil-Yeti made the dash across the water crossings look easy. We met up with The Red Goat and Eti as they headed back to meet us. Lil-Yeti decided we should try to finish the hike in 8 hours and with a speed I had trouble keeping up with we arrived at the parking lot at 6:03, 7 hours and 58 minutes after we started.
