Ascent Trip ReportMy wife, Geri, and I ascended this peak from the Swinging Bridge parking lot on Grandfather Mountain. Since the distance to the summit was only 2.4 miles, I figured we would be back at the car in less than 2 1/2 hours. I have never misjudged a climb more in my entire life. We did not return to the car until over 5 hours later! The trail to Calloway (not Callaway) Peak is a series of ladders, knotted cables and bedrock friction climbing slabs with a lot of Class 3 climbing. Without the ladders, there would actually be some Class 4 climbing in places. This is one of the most exciting "trails" I have ever hiked on. My only regret is that, since I did not get started until noon, I felt rushed to get back to the parking lot before the posted closing time of 6:00pm. If I ever return here, I will begin in the morning. We enjoyed a fine clear day and the views from the numerous overlooks was spectacular, including at the summit of Calloway Peak.
