Ascent Trip ReportAlthough this site lists Mount Hallback at 6329 feet, I found a sign on the summit of Mount Hallback that read, "6391 feet." In addition, the topo map of this mountain shows a highest closed contour line of 6360 feet. I feel the "6329" foot elevation indicated here is incorrect and this mountain is quite a bit higher. Using the 6391 foot elevation, this would place Mount Hallback as the 16th highest named summit point in North Carolina. Using the 6360 or the 6329 foot elevations, this would place Mount Hallback as the 17th highest named summit point in North Carolina. This was a quite an easy climb from Stepps Gap. There was a trail that led to within 250 feet of the summit and the bushwhacking from there was quite mild. It was surprising to find the summit sign on a mountain that required bushwhacking to reach it.
