Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can determine, Richland Balsam is the 13th highest named summit point in North Carolina. This is an easy ascent with a loop nature trail leading all the way from the closest overlook along the Blue Ridge Parkway to the summit. The entire length is about 1 mile. There is a summit sign, but it is not on the highest point. As is usual for many area peaks, the highest point was not easy to determine. My GPS took me a few dozen feet to the north of the sign and I was as close as a person could get without using surveying equipment. The summit is tree covered, so there is no summit vista, but the climb is a pleasant hike through a thick forest with no bushwhacking.
