Ascent Trip ReportChestnut Bald is the highest point in Transylvania County and that was my goal, but I ended up at the summit of Devils Courthouse instead. I will admit, however, that the weather was foggy and rainy, so I did not look at my GPS very much. I just followed the paved trail and noticed early in my climb that it was headed in the correct direction, so that was good enough for me. I was quite surprised to find myself at the dead end summit of Devils Courthouse. I was forced to backtrack to a fork in the trail and hike in the opposite direction, hoping to reach the AT which would take me to the peak I was trying to ascend in the first place. Fortunately, I intersected the AT and finally reached the northern slope of Chestnut Bald after a longer than expected hike. My GPS showed I was about 400 feet from the summit, so I had to bushwhack to reach it. It wasn't too bad until the final 50 feet when I encountered thick raspberry bushes. They were very unpleasant to pass through, but I finally reached the highpoint. There was no view, of course, because of the trees, but even if the summit was clearcut, I could not have seen anything through the rain and fog. My focus was peakbagging a county highpoint and not enjoying a summit vista. My primary goal was reached.
