Ascent Trip Report

Hiked Moosilauke with group on Saturday. Cool, but great weather. Left trailhead at the turn around on Ravine Rd around 9:50am. Hiked up the Asquam Ridge Trail by Mt. Waternomee, peaked Mt. Jim, onto Beaver Brook Trail, by Mt. Blue, onto Benton Trail, peaked Mt. Moosilauke, continued on Benton Trail, to Snapper Trail, to Gorge Brook Trail back to Moosilauke Ravine Lodge. Approximately 10 miles. Completed in 5.5 hours. I was hoping to bushwack Waternomee, Blue and the South Peak, but couldn't due to preferences of group. Good pace generally.

Trails were in good shape. The initial ascent up the Asquam Ridge Trail prior to crossing Baker River included a relocated trail away from the River due to probable washout from Hurricane/Tropical Storm Irene.

While hiking on the Beaver Brook Trail in the area of Mt. Blue, I was hiking with one person in front of me while the rest of the group was ahead. Suddenly, I heard panting behind me and VERY close. I turned to look back and it was a dog from a family we had passed about a half mile back. In the split second between hearing the panting and me turning to see a dog, I have to admit I was freaked by it! Dog was very friendly so no harm done.

Mt. Moosilauke peak was broad with at least 30 or 40 people spread around the peak in various stages of resting, eating, sleeping, sightseeing, etc. The Snapper trail was interesting in it's wide carriage/cart/herd width. I don't come across trails like that much.
