Ascent Trip ReportHighlight of 3 day Smokies trip was hike from Newfound Gap to Mount LeConte. Via the lesser used (as compared to Alum Cave) AT/Boulevard trail. Sunrise start from Newfound Gap probably made us first on the trail. Two bears on the way up to Mount Ambler, one wasn't scared of us at all, casually moving away and then she sat about 25 feet off the AT and watched us pass by.
2.7 miles on AT to Boulevard intersection. Boulevard is aligned with the ridge line for the most part and has some great views in both directions. 5.3 miles to top of LeConte, the last mile being significant uphill. Nice cliffside views to the north on the climb. Side trail to Myrtle Point about 0.2 miles from top. High point is clearly marked with a large rock cairn, but no views.
Hit Anakeesta Knob and Mount Kephart (via Jumpoff) on the way back. Back at Newfound before 5 pm. Great way to spend a day. AT was busy (most going to Charlie's Bunion or Jumpoff). Boulevard only saw one other hiker and one trail runner.
