Ascent Trip Report

An easy short trail/service road hike ....... 2 mile, 1 hour RT

This morning, after overnighting at Pine Hollow Campground, Pownal, VT, I went over to climb Berlin Mountain and Mount Raimer in NY, before driving east into MA to climb this CoHP ..... armed with Gene Daniell's TR I had no intentions of entering a TR in PB since there are already many reports, however after doing the hike I found the need to add a report since conditions on the ground have changed. Suggest you read Gene together with this report.
I should first note that !!!!! I didn't see any Wind Towers on this mountain as reported by others.

From the TH on Tilda Hill Road (at junction with Bliss Road), 1.6 miles north of hwy 2 at the Florida Volunteer Fire Department Station, I hiked the snowmobile trail east about a quarter-of-a-mile to an unfinished new Service Road (for the Wind Power project) coming up from the left. I turned right and climbed/followed the Road (see **** "NOTE A", below) to a large clearing on the north slope of the West knob. The Road circumvents the clearing clockwise to the top end of the clearing, just below the summit of the West Knob (this is about half a mile from the TH).
Here the Road turns left and circumvents counterclockwise the cleared West Knob summit area to its south side where it continues on the ridge southeast to the Main Summit .... the Road drops to the col at a clearing before climbing to another clearing northwest/short of the Main Summit.
At the end of the Road a grass track continues straight (look for a white arrow and a green/pink tape blazes) and passes the Main Summit to the right (200 yards at a small clearing) and continues down the ridge.
At the small clearing to the left are pink blazes that lead 50 feet inside the woods to the Summit Canister (a glass bottle inside another bottle). I signed the register, recognizing PB names such as Schwartz, Bernier, Dunham and Covill.

It appeared that the Wind Power project is on hold since the Service Road and clearings are overgrown in places. This opinion was confirmed by a couple I talked-to when I got back down to the TH. Apparently the original permit has expired and the developers are in the process of renewing same. The future access to this HP could be in peril .... hopefully Gene's opinion will hold true.

**** "NOTE A"
At 150 yards, after turning right on the Service Road, you'll see Gene's snowmobile trail on the right which climbs steeply and meets up with the Service Road at the West Knob (a short cut).

From this CoHP I drove west/north into Warren County, NY, for tomorrow's climb to Tenant Mountain, Saratoga CoHP ...... I overnighted at Stony Creek Family Campground.
