Ascent Trip Report

An exceptionally tough bushwhack due to a combination of relentlessly steep terrain and extremely thick vegetation.

The route up began through an older clear-cut that had visibility of only about 20' due to the thickness of the brush. That route was not followed down, and is quite strongly recommended to be avoided. Nearing the summit there were a few rock escarpments that were difficult to navigate around, though thankfully by that point the undergrowth was basically non-existent due to a fire (2005?). Be attentive to your footing in this area, as the thick carpet of dead/scorched pine-needles slide out easily on the steep ground.

On the decent I stayed in the burned-out area as long as possible, which required a more northernly route. At about 4000' I began traversing to the east until I came upon the clear-cut. I stayed along the edge of that clear-cut (north side) down to the road, then followed it to the car.

Note: The road up to the east ridge has been reported as too rough for a passenger car, but I found that to be inaccurate. There were about a dozen minor water-bars, all much smaller than the road up to Cloud Cap Inn.
