Ascent Trip Report9/3/2011
On a rather humid and cloudy day we decided to climb the Weeks and Waumbek peaks. The plan was to do a through hike from York Pond Trailhead to Starr King Trailhead. The Red Goat and Lil-Yeti let me out at the York Pond Trail and they drove around to the Starr King trail and we planned to meet at the summit of Mt. Waumbek.
I started up the York Pond Trail at 12:05. The crossings were manageable, but you could see that the streams were really high from Irene the week before. Crossed the first stream on what looks like new trees that got caught at the crossing. The last crossing was a bit trickier, but after one failed attempt I did find a dry way across by rock hopping.
The first part of York Pond trail was very wet from the rains, still many parts had running water on them.
The Kilkenny Ridge Trail up to the Summit of North Weeks has a lot of short switchbacks toward the top, so short I wondered why it just doesn’t go straight up. I reached the wooded summit of North Weeks at 1:45. The summit was in low clouds / fog so even through the trees there were no views.
The Kilkenny Ridge Trail has lots of blow-downs, some from last weeks passing of Irene, some from earlier this year and others seem to be from years ago. I’m not sure how often a trail gets ‘maintained’, but there sure was a lot of going over, under and around the trees. At one point I went around a rather large area of blow downs and couldn’t find the trail on the other side. Took a few hundred feet before I crossed it again.
I saw a very fresh bear track in the mud on the way to South Weeks, luckily the owner was no where to be seen. I reached the summit of South Weeks at 3:10.
The way to Waumbek was pretty easy, although the trail was pretty well grown in with ferns. Between the humidity and the wet ferns, keeping dry today was impossible. I met up with the Red Goat at the summit of Mt. Waumbek at 4:25. The sun just started to poke through the clouds, but again the wooded summit did not offer any views.
The condition of Starr King trail was completely different than what I had been hiking all day. It is much wider and there were no blow-downs to speak of. This trail certainly gets much more traffic. We took a short break at Mt. Starr King where Lil-Yeti was patiently waiting. Unfortunately today she developed some really bad blisters. It was an uneventful decent and we reached the Starr King parking at 6:45.
