Ascent Trip Report

A moderate trail climb ..... 10km, 2h25 hours RT.

This is our 16th day, and our last climb, of our 19 day Hiking Trip to Tenerife. During this Hiking Trip we made 6 day-trips to the Teide Caldera (tough driving with lots of switchbacks, sea level to about 2300 meters).
The TH Parking (elev 2350 meters) for Montana Blanca/Pico del Teide is one of the same, at "KM40.2" of the hwy TF21, 3km east of the Teleferico Station. The wide dirt road "route #7" ascends/winds at a moderate grade generally north, to where it meets up with "Route #6" coming in on the right from El Portillo. The road swings left and continues southwest on long switchbacks to the Blanca/Teide col at northwest side of Blanca, elevation 2720 meters, known as El Puesto de Mulas. The trail for Teide on the right is posted but to Blanca on the left is not.

On the way up (just below this col) you pass huge black balls known as Huevos del Teide, enormous puroclasts or volcanic bombs blown out of the Teide crater.

At the col I turned left and followed the easy/well-maintained trail a short distance to the summit of MONTANA BLANCA. The trail stays to the right of the summit and continues to a bump where it circles a large cairn for views. On the way back I went off trail 30 meters on the soft cinder surface to the actual summit. Number of human traffic signs throughout the dome, a trail would help to protect this area. The RT from the col is 1km, 20 minutes.

I returned the same way, my source of information was "Rother Walking Guide, Tenerife, Trail #51", and "Spain's Teide National Park Topographic Map with Trail Guide, scale 1:25,000, Route #7".
