Ascent Trip Report

A moderate trail hike to 3 different summits at the very-top/westend of Teide National park ...... 8km, 2h50 hours RT for all 3 summits including breaks.

At the very-top/westend of Teide National Park (above/east-of the municipality of Guida de Isora) beside Hwy TF38 are 3 summits that share the same TH (Somara, Botija and Reventada) and can be climbed individually or all in one trip ..... I chose to to do the 3 in one trip. The landscape of area is beautiful/different from the rest of the Park and I believe the 3 summits belong in the PB Libray for future Peakbaggers to enjoy, I therefore have added them for Greg's approval.

My source of information was the "Rother Walking Guide, Tenerife, Trail #15" and "Spain's Teide National Park Topographic Map and Trail Guide, Sendero #13".

We left Los Cristianos this morning (our 15th day in Tenerife) and drove northwest (TF1/TF82) to the municipality of Guia de Isora where a few km later turned right on TF38 for Teide. Just past "KM8 Marker" on the left is the popular TH Parking (inside the Park) ...... everything is well posted with Park signs. Montana Samora can be seen a stones-throw away to the north and to the east is the cinder cone of Montana Botija.

I left the TH on Sendero #13, northeast to the east ridge of Samara at a large cairn (abt 250 meters) ....... a left turn climbs westbound a short distance to the summit of MONTANA SAMARA, 15 minutes less than 1km RT (I climbed this summit on my return trip from Reventada) ......... I turned right eastbound on #13 as it climbs/winds its way to the small saddle on the northeast ridge of Botija (abt 2km from the TH). At the saddle a small/lesser-used trail on the right (small cairn) ascends southwest on the ridge to the crater rim of MONTANA BOTIJA (I did this on my return from Reventada), then clockwise on the rim to the HP on the west rim of the crater, from Sendero #13 on the saddle it is 1km, less than 30 minutes RT.
This peak perhaps offers the best views of all 3 summits, Pico Viejo/del Teide to the east and Isla de La Gomera to the west.

From the small saddle northeast of Botija I continued eastbound on #13 as it stays-left/traverses the slopes of Botija to the east side of Botija and the col with Reventada. At this col Sendero #13 reaches its apex and makes a sharp turn right (160 degree), traverses the west slopes of Botija and makes its way back to the TH. This col is about 3km, 50 minutes from the TH.

From this col a lesser-used/unsigned/unmaintained trail climbs easterly (1km, 25 minutes) to the summit of MONTANA REVENTADA, always straight ahead and skyward is the slope Pico Viejo and the tip of Pico del Teide. The trail is mostly lava rock with poor footing, climbs the narrow/precipitous south-side crater rim (drops vertically to the inside as it nears the summit). This whole area is like a huge slag dump.
The north side rim across the wide crater appears to be higher in elevation but all my info says it is 6 meters lower. Reventada is 4km, 1h15 hour one way from the TH.

I took a nice long break before descending/backtracking on the same route and visiting the other 2 peaks noted above.
