Ascent Trip ReportI read that the 3 mile drive up to the trailhead was rough and that a high clearance vehicle was needed. It definitely was, even with 4WD I had to make a few creative moves to get through. Set out from the trailhead with son Nels at 5 a.m. with head lamps. Very easy trail to follow. We were out of the treeline quickly and more than half way up by sunrise. Beautiful valley to hike with abandoned mines sprinkled along the mountainsides. We were the first ones up Grays that day and thought we were going to be first up nearby Torrey's peak but as we approached the summit a runner came bounding over and down the trail. He had shorts, running shoes, water and a lot more youth than I. I assume he came up the ridge trail on the north side of the peak. He was too busy to say hi, probably had many summits left to run that day. Sunny and windy on Grays and calm on Torreys. We were back to the trailhead shortly after 10 a.m. We headed back to Minnesota after a great week of hiking in the Rockies.
