Ascent Trip Report

The route from Dunraven pass is a little longer than NP signs indicate. The trailhead sign says 3.0 miles, but that does not include the spur road at the top. My GPS had the roundtrip at 7.5 miles, including some wandering around the summit.

Signs say to allow 4 hours for the roundtrip. Because this was our first hike beyond Appalachian altitude, we took it easy and finished in 5:45, including 45 minutes at the summit to soak in the view, which includes the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone as well as the Tetons.

On the way down, we saw a grizzly on the hillside a half-mile away on the far side of the road through Dunraven Pass. There's so much foot traffic on the Dunraven trail that it's unlikely that you'll surprise a bear nearby.
