Ascent Trip Report

Picked up a Climber's Guide at the visitor center in town. Highly recommended since the crude Canada topo map found online shows the trail climbing some 400m north of the Dragon's Back, before you cross the Central Gully. Though considered an easy scramble by Banff standards, this was a very strenuous climb. Nice trail to the Central Gully, then the real climb started. The path starting up the forested ridge was extremely steep with only the tree roots holding the dirt in place. The Dragon's Back wasn't quite as steep, but it had enough loose scree on the angled slab to make it difficult. The final section to the false summit was steep with deep loose scree. I did find some more solid rock sections to the left of most paths that were a little easier. Look for where the rocks change from gray to brown on the left side. To get to the summit required one exposed class 4 downclimb of about a meter. Less than 20% were making the summit on this day, with many giving up on the upper Dragon's Back or final scree slope. In other words, many were getting so close but still giving up. None of the tennis shoe wearers were making it. Hiking boots provide much better grip on the Dragon's Back. Despite warnings in the Climber's Guide, I found the way back straight forward. Just look for the yellow markers as you enter the trees and follow the main footpath. The accident sites depicted on their map appear to have been deliberate attempts to find another way down.
