Ascent Trip Report

The trip started with a light rain off and on. just enough to keep all the trees wet. Not a bad start though it was cool and the bugs were hiding. Our day began at 4AM to drive to the trail head at Tawahas. At 8AM we set out from the register the first 1.8 miles on a truck road that is mostly in good shape and is now labeled for ATVs only. Next is a right turn on to the Trail to Duck Hole. This trail could us a lot of TLC you hike along this trail for about 1.7 miles where it turns into a swamp. The former corderoy road is mostly gone and the trail widens to 20 plus feet in attempts to avoid knee deep mush. This goes on to the official trail to the Santanonis at a large rock and clearing (beaver meadow) on the right. at this point it doubles back a bit to cross the beaver dam. the dam has been washed out so it is a large leap across in the spring to a not so stable log. We avoided falling in and proceeded on the contour line through an open forest. The path follows along the west end of Bradley pond. There are dozens of herds paths but they all seem to end in the right spot. At this point the trail starts to climb. The assent covers about 2 miles and 1400' of elevation following Panther Brook for about 1/2 the time. The junction to Panther goes right and the trail to the left goes to Couchsachraga and Santanoni. (The trail that appears to go strait is a dead end) We continued on to Couchsachraga at this point and came back for Panther on our way out. But from this point Panther is a pretty easy 1/2 hour walk dropping a few feet then climbing a couple hundred feet over about 1/2 mile. At the top we were treated to sunny skies and a nice breeze but it was getting late so we did not hang around long. The trip out took about 3 hours and we arrived at our cars at about 8:30 so a long day but as always in the mountains a great day. The trip over to Couchsachraga is covered under that peak. In summary it is a long way over the ridge to Couch' but the view and path is surprizingly good.
