Ascent Trip ReportThis was my 26th state highpoint. I had just completed state HP # 25 2 days previous. Woohoo, half way there!!! After summiting Mt. Elbert on the 11th we checked out some other mountains and scenic areas in the area N of Leadville. On Saturday the 13th we made our way N on I-25 towards the Wyoming border. We followed the instructions on Summitpost and exited off I-80 at Pine Bluffs, WY. After taking a round-about (probably longer route) way through town we found Beech St. and followed it S out of town and into the sticks. The first 9 miles out of town were paved but then we turned onto a gravel road. We saw another highpointer on her way out. We rushed down the roads as quick as we could since day light was running out. As it turned out it was a perfect time to be there since the sun set added to the view and the full moon allowed for some great pictures too.
We got a kick out of the requirement that we fill out permits that must be displayed in your windshield while visiting. Seemed very beaurecratic for a remote bump on the land that is so sparsely visited, but hey we're really glad that they keep this open to the public!! :) I think if I told anyone we paid $6 to visit this area and then show them the pictures they would probably have us commited though.
We also saw a family that arrived while we were signing the register. The father had just summited his 39th State HP and one of his daughters had aspirations to be the youngest to summit all 50 HPs. I'm not sure how many she had but sounds like they only had the western states to go. Good luck!
