Ascent Trip ReportFrom New Mexico 63 I took Forest Road 646 for 14 1/2 miles to just below the peak. I walked the last 150 yards just so It wouldn't be a total drive up. The route seemed more straightforward than some of the previous trip reports suggest; at the various intersections before the final turn just below the peak either one alternative was blocked by a gate or the other choice looked significantly less well-traveled. The only wrinkles were that the Forest Service numbered road signs switched from 646 to 645 part way up, and the condition of the road was a bit rougher than I expected, possibly because of recent rains. Approaching thunderstorms dissuaded me from hiking a bit on the ridge line trail that goes though here.
