Ascent Trip Report

A wet/slippery/rocky trail climb over 3 peaks ...... 9.6 miles, 8 3/4 hour RT.

The plan for today was a counter-clockwise climb over Center Ridge/The Traveler/North Traveler, then drive out of the Park and travel as far as possible towards my port of entry into the USA at the Woburn/Coburn Gore Border Crossing.

I was early to rise and left the Pogy Notch TH (6h45 hours), under poor weather conditions, southbound 1.4 miles to the Center Ridge trail, where it immediately started its steep eastbound ascent. A light intermittent drizzle started shortly after.
The trail climbs mostly over open/lose rock and with the wet conditions a slow/slippery climb. The rocky trail got worse/slippery as I climbed over a few bumps and eventually reached the summit of CENTER RIDGE (10h45 hours). The weather not good and my pace was very slow and labored, a lot of granny breaks.

Weather conditions didn't improve, infact they got worse as I summited THE TRAVELER (12h15 hours), the climb taking 5 1/2 hours. It was decision time, I knew the trail behind me but not ahead so I decided to play it safe and backtrack over CENTER RIDGE rather than continue, it was raining heavier at this point. Although with all the sweating not a real problem except for the rocky/slippery conditions.

The weather started to improve later in the descent and at the end I was getting short light drizzle with some short sunny periods, this would continue for most of the afternoon. I was out at the TH at 15h30 hours, the descent taking 3 1/4 hours.

After getting cleaned up I drove out of the park, exiting at the Matagamon North Entrance, and continued to I95 south stopping at exit 244, Medway to call Rose. She wasn't too happy with me because I didn't call her .... I don't carry a cell phone and there are no phones in Baxter Park. I went to McDonalds for dinner then continued to drive I95 south, at exit 157 I went west on #2 to Skowhegan and my campsite for the night "Two Rivers Campground". The honest nice guy charged me 20$ for a 27$ site because I was alone, I didn't ask for it. This world is full of great/honest people.
