Ascent Trip ReportI took forest roads 437, 478, and 441 (26 miles) to a meadow at the dead end of 441 with a nice view of the Truchas Peaks where I had lunch. I then parked about 300 yards east of my picnic spot and clawed my way up the steep embankment. My GPS put me at 0.12 mi. from the top, but I actually traveled more than three times that far trying to create switchbacks on the extremely steep slope. I crossed several abandoned logging tracks (that I used a bit on the way down). The top is a small wooded mesa--not clear where the highest spot is but it's west of the spot marked 10205 on the topo map. I saw a small black bear scampering down the forest road on my return. Taos County #34.
