Ascent Trip Report

Because of fire restrictions throughout New Mexico this year I was not able to hike any peaks in July so I decided to do two hikes in one day. I left the house at 5:20 AM and preceded to the William’s Lake parking area a little past the Taos Ski Valley. I took my dog Daisy. We started hiking at 8:40 on a clear cool morning. The starting elevation was 10,240 feet. My plan was to hike up the Kachina bowl on the south side of the Taos ski area, but rather than going straight up as I did two years ago hiking Kachina peak, I decided to switchback it a little bit and use the service roads. It was a beautiful flower filled hike and I snacked on wild strawberries as I climbed. As I hiked I saw a couple of marmots and at the top saw about a dozen rams with their majestic curling horns. I took lots of pictures of them and then enjoyed the views from the top. This peak was recently added to Peakbaggers as a minor peak, the elevation is 12,012. I got there at 10:20 after hiking 2.4 miles, an hour and 40 minutes to make it to the top. When I hike, I like to get ever knoll and peak that I see in the area, just in case it is added some time. I hiked across the top of the Kachina bowl to some small peaks then went a little further south and then came down the far south side of the ski area. I saw another whole group of female big horn sheep with some babies. I arrived back at the car at 11:40 after hiking 4.6 miles, a total time of 3 hours to go up and back. That finished the morning hike.
I got in the car and drove to the Taos Ski Valley parking area and started to hike at 12:00 PM on the Twining trail. Near the start of the trail I saw my third heard of rams. My goal was to hike Bull of the Woods Mountain which has an elevation of 11,640 feet. I was not interested in hiking any 11K peaks in New Mexico until this year and have just started hiking them. After finishing all the New Mexico 13K peaks and only having 17 more 12K peaks to hike, I decided, so that I would have a rich field of peaks to hike, that I had better start hiking some of the 11K peaks. The hike was a combination of a beautiful trail and an unused service road near a rushing stream. The starting elevation is 9,490 feet. I hiked for 2 hours and 15 minutes and reached the peak after hiking 3.5 miles. The top of the peak is an old mine with very interesting rocks that have been turned up. I picked up a number of turquoise rocks. Again the views were spectacular! I don’t think I could have picked a better day to hike. Usually in August the clouds appear in the afternoon, but this time it was a perfectly clear day all day, cool and with little wind. It couldn’t have been a better day to hike! I decided to hike another small peak that was a little further south, between Bull of the Woods Mountain and Frazer Peak. This little peak had an elevation of 11,770. By the time I got to the end of the hike I had hiked 4 miles. It’s all downhill back!. The hike back was beautiful flower-filled, forested, with stunning views in all directions. I arrived back at the car at 4:15 after hiking 7.5 miles. My total hiking distance for both hikes was 12.1 miles with a total elevation gain of 4052 feet. At the bottom to the Taos ski area, at the base of the Kachina bowl, is the Barbarian outdoor restaurant and grill. I had a delicious buffalo burger outside in the fresh mountain air before heading home.
