Ascent Trip ReportFor the first hike during our stay at the Heart Lake campground, Jim and Diana Huss, and Gary Diana and I decided on a thru hike from Route 9 to Route 73. We left Jim’s truck at the Giant/Roaring Brook trailhead and set out after arriving at the trailhead for the East Trail in Gary’s Kia around 07:45. Shortly after that four of us hit the trail, Gary and I broke off and hiked ahead. We met back up with Jim and Diana at a lookout about a mile below the summit of Bald Peak, which we would pass over en route to Rocky Peak Ridge. After our rendezvous, Gary and I once again hiked ahead. We opted not to take the “shortcut trail,” and learned quite swiftly why the route is also known as Blueberry Cobbles, and enjoyed some of the sweet berries as we hiked. We reached the summit of Bald Peak with a nice 360 degree view, where we stopped briefly for a snack, some pictures, and to call Jim on the two-way radio to let him know where we were. We noticed some ominous dark clouds overhead toward our planned route, and hoped that we would be able to stay dry and out of the clouds. Shortly after summiting, we topped out Rocky Peak, which initially confused me and Gary. A quick check of our elevation on Gary’s GPS alleviated our confusion and informed us that Rocky Peak and Rocky Peak Ridge were indeed two separate summits, and we continued on the trail. Gary stopped to filter some water at Mary Louise Pond while I took some pictures of the shallow alpine water. We reached the summit of Rocky Peak Ridge, ate our lunch, a turkey sandwich, and once again radioed Jim while we enjoyed another excellent view. After leaving the summit, we descended into a col, which was fairly steep as we began our ascent of Giant. On the summit of Giant, we once again enjoyed excellent views, including of the Ausable Club in the valley below. A couple joined us on top, and when I asked if they were headed to RPR (Rocky Peak Ridge) next, he replied “no, I don’t know RPR, but I know RPI.” Gary and I decided that due to being ahead of Jim and Diana, we would take a longer route down, and then get Gary’s SUV. As part of our detour, we headed toward the other Route 73 trailhead and took a side trail that led back to the Roaring Brook trail. When Giant’s Washbowl came into view, we saw someone paddling a small canoe on the tiny pond, and wondered how they had brought their boat up the steep trail. We took a short side trip to Giant’s Nubble, a rock outcrop below the summit, as well as the top of Roaring Brook Falls. We reached Jim’s truck a short time later, and concluded the first of three excellent days on the trail.
