Ascent Trip ReportA trail/bushwack from the Kancamagus Hwy to 3 Peaks on a very hot day....... 11.3 miles, 7 1/2 hour total Loop Hike.
The primary prize for this trip was to bag Scaur Peak and Fool Killer with a return to North and Middle Tripyramid, I planned a counter-clockwise Loop Hike ...... I would not get Fool Killer.
From the nearby Passaconaway Campground Rose dropped me off at the Pine Bend Brook TH on the Kancamagus Hwy, she'll spend the day in North Conway and pick me up the Sabbaday TH (just to the east) at an estimated return time of 17-18h00 hours.
I left southbound on the well-used Pine Bend Brook trail at 8h00 hours, arriving on the ridge East of Scaur Peak at 10h20 hours (3.2 miles). The last mile was pretty steep/tough on me (numerous granny breaks), I took a short snack break.
As been reported by others a good herd path leaves this ridge (drops slightly before it climbs) westbound for the SCAUR PEAK summit at less than .6 miles (15 minutes). Actually there is more than one path at places, probably caused by the tall ferns in the col area that hides the path. Its an easy jaunt over in a fairly open mixed wood except for when you get to the summit area ..... extremely dense new evergreen growth makes the going very difficult, I walked/fought circles looking for the high ground and the reported Canister "which I never found". I thought perhaps I was on a false summit so I walked west a few hundred yards on the continuation of a good head path to confirm my location.
I got back to the Pine Bend Brook trail on the ridge and picked up the Tripyramid Trail eastbound (a short distance up trail and at a lower elevation) for the less than a mile climb to NORTH TRIPYRAMID (the climb was steep and tough on this old man, numerous granny breaks once again) ..... wooded summit with poor partial views through the trees, the time was 12h05 hours, I took a long snack break.
I continued eastbound on the Tripyramid trail, dropping down to the col before attaining the summit of MIDDLE TRIPYRAMID (less than a mile, 25 minutes) ..... wooded with outstanding partial views.
I descended the Tripyramid Trail westbound to the col where I picked up the Sabbaday Brook Trail northbound (drops very steeply the first mile) for the long descend to the Kancamagus Hwy, visiting the Sabbaday Falls on the way. I was out at 15h30 hours completely soaked, Rose had just arrived from North Conway.
On the descend I was able to see/scout the south slopes of FOOL KILLER which appear to be mostly a deciduous forest with a patches of evergreen. On the descend the Sabbaday Brook Trail crosses a tributary at about 2700 feet (according to the goggle maps), at this point the Trail descends east, crosses the tributary and turns/follows the tributary southerly, this (according to Alan Bernier, see his TR) is a good place to start the bushwack.
I was completely zapped by the time I got here (sweated tons) and it was a bit too late (13h50 hours) to start what I believe will be a taxing bushwack for me ...... I thought best to attempt this one after the foliage.
