Ascent Trip ReportDaniel and I wanted to climb this famous mountain with the extreme weather. We picked a perfect day and left from the Pinkham Notch and elected to do the Tuckerman Ravine Trail up to the Lion Head Trail and then to the summit. Along the way we checked out the streams and the waterfall of the Cutler River. We enjoyed climbing up the Lion Head and picked non trail routes to play with some scrambling for fun photos. The weather was perfect so we took wonderful photos of the Presidential Range and now I want to climb along the Presidential traverse! About 150 feet from the top the weather suddenly changed and clouds of fog rolled in and gave us white out the minute we reached the top. Ha!~
The temperature was 80F at the bottom but by the time we summitted and the fog rolled in it was 42F and windy. Glad I brought the rain gear and fleece. The top 200 feet of the ascent was a typical alpine boulder to boulder to leap but the rocks were very stable. State HP#18 done.
After a 3 hour climb of 4200 feet or so, it is a bit dissapointing to have to share the highpoint photo with hundreds of people that simply drive up. In this regard, Baxter Peak in Katahdin (Maine's HP) is a much more special ascent. At least, we had the trail pretty to much our self for most of the day until we reached the top. See Trip Report for playing around on the Crags for extra hiking and re-ascending Washington later that day for more gain and training on the legs. As for this leg of the trip the minor amount of extra Ascent: Checking out waterfalls, and other features along the way and few rolls around 100 feet more.
