Ascent Trip Report

After climbing Mount Washington in NH as my state HP #18 and doing a few extra peaks on that mountain ridge, we drove back to Maine and I saw the opportunity to claim one more ME County HP. We already gained a total of 5,100 feet that morning and this peak was steep as well. I talked Danny into climbing with me while Sarah and Ben slept in the car. I asked for permission from some maintenance folks working at the ski resort and obtained permission to climb the slopes.

Danny and I busted up the longest triple chair lift knowing it would get us to the top. I was feeling good and busted up the green then blue then black slopes without stopping. Danny was worn out because of Mt Washington earlier that day so I ended up waiting for for over 15 minutes near the top. I was on pace to bag the peak and back to the car in about 45 to 50 minutes but with all the stops for my tired son we ended up taking about 1 hour and 10 minutes.

The views of the large water feature below (Moose Pond) from the slopes were really quite surprisingly good. The manicured slopes gave excellent views. Near the top I followed the bearing to the HP as shown on google earth. There is a marked trail in the bottom of small valley before having to scramble up a very steep blueberry filled hillside. There was no trail or evidence of others going up this steep way so we took it eating blueberries all the way up. The traction was excellent despite the very steep slopes but the area was infested with ticks.

On the way down Danny picked up trash and stuffed it in my backpack. In the car we started to notice just how many ticks we picked up as they were seen by my other kids crawling on the ipod, ankles and boots. We pulled over and pulled about 10 ticks off of us then when on to dinner to celebrate a strong day of vertical climbing.

I climbed a total of 6,550 feet of gain for the day a nice work out before my annual guys trip (to Utah this year). I am in the best hiking shape I can remember. I hope to celebrate my fifty year Bday by climbing ten 13 ers in August.
