Ascent Trip Report

I accessed this peak from the Unknown Pond Trailhead on Millbrook Road. I picked up Millbrook Road from Rte. 110 in the town of Stark, and drove 4.5 miles on Millbrook and parked in a pull-out spot just after the second bridge.

I hiked the Unknown Pond Trail about two miles to Unknown Pond, and then turned right onto the Kilkenny Ridge Trail to make the ascent of The Horn, The Bulge and Mt. Cabot. The summit of The Horn is reached by following a side trail from the Kilkenny Ridge Trail, about 1.3 miles from Unknown Pond. The side trail is marked with a sign that says "The Horn 0.3".

The side trail stops just below the summit, and then a short scramble is required to reach the highest point and the remarkable panorama. I started my scramble and realized that my chosen route was much more exposed than it needed to be. I moved over a bit to a safer route, and just as I completed my climb to the top, I heard voices. An upper-20s-ish couple had shown up, and the guy clearly had been there before, because he walked around to a spot that offerered the shortest, easiest climb to the top. His girlfriend/wife/whatever climbed up as high as she felt comfortable, and sat down to take in the view. The three of us chatted for a few minutes, and then I headed out to continue my hike.

The top of The Horn is the only place to get a full view when making the northern approach to Mt. Cabot. You really have to make the short scramble to the top (if you're comfortable doing so) to get above the trees and rocks that otherwise partly obstruct the view.
