Ascent Trip Report

My friend John and I camped out near the Appalachia trailhead the night before so we were up and on the trail by 6:10. We took Valley Way for the first 2.4 miles, then hopped over onto the Watson Path for the 1.5 mile hike to the summit. At about 0.8 miles from the junction with Valley Way, the trail leaves the woods and we were scrambling over rocks above treeline for the next ~0.6 miles. The views were incredible and we had amazing weather for such a hike. I thought the rock scramble was fun, but it is tough on the legs and feet and we were carrying ~35-pound packs as well. We made the summit and spent quite a bit of time lounging and taking pictures, then it was down the 0.4 miles to the Madison Hut where I gladly paid the $3 for an "endless" bowl of chicken chowder. After lunch it was down the 3.8 miles back to the Appalachia trailhead and a quick nap while John drove us to where my truck was parked. This trip was a learning experience for us and we will be back to tackle the entire Presidential Traverse, but I think we'll make use of the huts and work on reducing the pack weights. Great trip!
