Yucaipa Ridge Traverse. Includes Little San Gorgonio, Wilshire Mtn, Wilshire Peak, Oak Glen Peak, Cedar Mtn, Birch Mtn, Allen Peak. Shuttle required with vehicles at the exit point parked at the Bear Paw Preserve and vehicles at the start point at Vivian Creek Trailhead parking lot. Winnette Butler's 100th lead.
Started at Vivian Creek Trailhead parking lot then south up gravel wash east of Camp Creek. Near its headwall we climbed out of the gravel wash up onto the adjacent ridge. Adjacent ridge was very steep with about 3,300' of gain over about 2 miles. We gained the top of the steep ridge and traversed SE across it to a saddle at 8,440'. From the saddle we followed the Yucaipa ridge west steeply up to the summit of Little San Gorgonio.
From Little San Gorgonio we traveled west across the ridge top to Wilshire Mountain, Wilshire Peak, and then Oak Glen Peak. This section was about 1.5 miles and was quite easy; very little gain, and an overall loss in elevation. From Oak Glen Peak to Cedar Mountain is an overall decrease in elevation but with a sizable loss in elevation followed by a big gain. From Cedar Mountain to Birch Mountain there was even more up and down sections followed by a very steep climb to ascend Birch. The trail from Birch toward the Allen-Birch Saddle starts out very vague. I lost the trail at one point, pulling the whole group into the brush with me, but we found it again quickly. Soon the use trail becomes a well defined trail, then a 4x4 road, then a good fire road.
At the Allen-Birch Saddle most of the group returned to the vehicles, but Jim Fleming, John Slagle and I continued on over road and then well-defined use trail to Allen Peak. We returned to the cars from Allen Peak about an hour after the rest of the group did.
