Ascent Trip Report

***Sierra Club HPS Outing***
Led by Peter and Ignacia Doggett, co-led by me, Chris Spisak, Lilly Fukui

Once the route passes the intersection with the Vivian Creek Trail it passes up along and into the Mill Creek streambed. The route up Mill Creek is nearly completely unmarked because of apparent reworking of the streambed during the past winter/spring season. There is numerous evidence of significant "mass debris" movement down the stream channel this past season with numerous areas where new sliding from canyon walls have covered the previous route up. The Headwall is in really bad shape according to those who have done this hike before; nearly any trace of a use path across it have been erased by erosion. It's very slippery crossing the headwall, and it looks like the light brown rock and soil that overlie the gray soil of the headwall tens of feet above the route across the headwall are ready to let loose and slide down into the canyon.

Ten of the eleven in our group made it across the headwall; one turned back. Nine of the ten who crossed the headwall made it to the Galena Summit. It was much harder to cross the headwall coming down than going up.
