Ascent Trip ReportFrom Wellsville we found our way to the east side of Alma Hill, intersection Alma Hill Road and Fords Brook South Branch. We traveled south on Alma Hill Road .17 miles to a chained dirt track on the right, we found parking on Alma Road.
I hiked the track west (short distance) to the summit area of ALMA HILLt at a "some rock surfaces", round tank and vertical steel pipes on the left. I continued on the flat at one oclock, track bends left and soon reached/saw a Witness Post, beside it a BM imbedded in a rock, "US Coast Geodetic Survey, ALMA No 2, 1929", my GPS read 42.04890, 78.01216. This is not the highpoint and the whole area is a sea of ferns, there is a smell of oil ..... I walked the fern covered large area as best as I could trying to touch the high ground.
I found my way back to the "some rock surfaces" and went northerly 70 yards to the old pumping station , a stronger smell of oil in this area. I continued past the building at 310 degrees compass 50 yards (in dense/tall ferns) and found two other Witness Posts. Beside one, on top of a 12" high pipe, was "US Geological Survey, elev 2543', MCM, 1926". Beside the other imbedded in concrete was "US Coast and Geodetic Survey, Alma USGS, 1929, No3, 1967". I forgot my GPS readings.
This whole ALMA HILL summit is one large area covered in ferns in a fairly open forest, and to find "The" HP takes someone better than me. The whole hike including the stomping around, GPS readings, etc, was less than a mile, 45 minutes RT.
THE CANDIDATE AREA SOUTH OF ALMA HILL ..... less than 800 yards, 20 minutes RT.
From the intersection referred-to above we drove south on Alma Hill Road .68 miles to a AD&T Communication Tower and a large building on the left, we parked in the driveway, across the road is an overgrown track (gets better once inside the woods) that took me to the summit.
I hiked/followed the track generally north of west 250 yards where it reaches/climbs on a defined ridge (perhaps 30 yards wide), an excellent path continues on the ridges (same hiking direction) in beautiful large evergreen forest, perhaps another 150 yards before it starts to descend. The whole ridge is fairly flat and difficult to pick "The" HP, I attempted to touch all high spots on the way back.
From here we moved on to Clare Benchmark, Cattaraugus CoHP, stopping in at Hartzfelt Mountain on the way.
