Ascent Trip Report

Chose the Starvation Ridge climb since I thought it had steeper sections than Mt Defiance Trail. Actually, I don't think either can be called easier to descend. Trail easy to follow, but topo shows some side trails and 4WD roads that no longer exist. Started running into snow just above Warren Lake. Just below the main talus field, put on the crampons. I needed to try these out; the snow was hard-packed enough to walk on. Skirted the talus to stay on snow, which was solid and up to 4ft deep the rest of the way up. Only views on top were Mt Hood and Hood River Valley. Stopped for lunch on talus field west of the trail. Great views there of Mounts St Helens, Rainier, and Adams. Mt Rainier was quite clear 80 miles away.
