Ascent Trip ReportI have climbed Clingmans Dome six times. On this occasion, my wife, Geri, and I hiked over this peak during a sectional hike of the AT in May of 2003. Although, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Tennessee, since it sits directly on the TN-NC state line, it shares a significant rank in the highpoints of North Carolina. As far as I can determine, Clingmans Dome is the 3rd highest named point in North Carolina. This peak can be easily climbed by using the 1/2 mile paved Clingmans Dome trail from a huge parking area in Great Smoky Mountains National Park and you can get the satisfaction of climbing the highest point in Tennessee and the 3rd highest named point in North Carolina at the same time.
