Ascent Trip ReportAs far as I can remember, this was my first climbing experience. It was during a summer vacation in the early 1960's. I was a young child, but old enough to recall the fantastic spiral summit lookout tower and the fun I had running up and down it. This was also my first exposure to the concept of different life zones due to changes in elevation and my mother did an excellent job pointing this out to me. I remember being amazed at the change in vegetation, especially the trees, as we climbed higher. The cool air in the middle of the summer made a huge impression on me. Little did I know, my wife, Geri, and I would be married at Newfound Gap nearly 40 years later on January 1, 2000. We immediately celebrated our union with a 17-mile roundtrip hike from Newfound Gap to the summit of Clingman's Dome and, of course, included a short tranverse to the adjacent peak, Mount Love!
