Ascent Trip Report

What should have been a rather easy hike turned into a moderate one when Marys Peak Road was closed just about at highway 34, adding over 10 miles and over 1500' of gain.

The road part was fairly easy, but finding the trail was not trivial. There was an unsigned parking lot that may have had a sign for the trail (we missed the lot), but then, at about 2600' there is a closed road branching off to the right- if one starts down that, before even getting to the gate, there is an obvious (but unsigned) trail to the left- that is the East Ridge Trail! The trail appeared to continue to the right, perhaps going to the unsigned parking lot mentioned above.

Once on the trail, it is beautifully maintained. The only thing to look out for is, after about 2 miles, steps on the left which then turns into a trail going the opposite direction (switchbacking) - this is a shortcut to the summit, and while it is signed, the sign is easy to miss. If you do miss it, it's not that big of a deal- the trail promptly ends in a parking lot with a service road to the summit.
