Ascent Trip Report

We started out on for a two day summit attempt Friday morning knowing that the forecast for Saturday called for a moderate chance of wind and rain. After the extra 3 mile hike into trail head at Cold Springs, we were pretty far behind schedule so we stopped and set up camp just below South Butte at 7,300' in hopes of making an alpine start Saturday morning.

We went to bed under beautiful clear blue skies. When we woke at midnight to check the weather, the clouds had rolled in and the summit was no longer visible down to about 10,000'. We decided to wait out another couple hours and check the weather again before making our decision. By 2am the wind was really picking up and light rain was starting so we decided not to attempt the summit and instead wait until daylight and head down.

By 4am the winds were up to around 30mph and the rain was starting in earnest so we packed up camp and headed back to the cars. None of the other climbers we talked to this morning made it much higher than 8,000' before turning back as well.
