Ascent Trip Report

We parked at the Clayton Corral on FR 1950 right on the Taos-Colfax county line, and headed up east of the fence line many people have followed (as we did on the way down) and along the east side of a ridge slightly to the east of the one with the fenceline. We did this in part to use the ridge as a wind break from the extremely high winds. We found intermittent use paths along the route suggesting others had also taken this route. The route is close to a straight line from the parking spot to the peak but involves a bit of extra elevation gain as you pass over an additional saddle.

Once we hit the ridge line above timberline slightly under a mile from the peak, the winds became truly brutal almost blowing us down and seriously slowing the final ascent. On top we hunkered down behind the rock pile marking the peak and including the USGS benchmark. We located the can with the trail register and signed in. I was surprised to see dozens of names, all from the last two years, that I did not recognize from Peakbagger or County Highpointers.

On the way down we followed the fenceline that so many others have followed. This route offers better footing and fewer fallen trees than the route we took up, but ends at the road 0.6 mi. west of the corral where we parked. Future climbers might consider parking up the road from the corral to save a bit of mileage.
