Ascent Trip ReportGatlinburg, TN & Pigeon Forge, TN are tourist meccas & were extremely congested, crowded, & slow to get through. But after entering Great Smoky Mountains Park, it was an easy & beautiful drive to the trail head with plenty of wildlife sightings. I saw deer, coyotes, foxes, & plenty of squirrels along the nice, winding, postcard perfect road leading up the mountain.
Easy hike up to the curling lookout tower. I thought it was pretty funny that some of the other visitors (not even going to call them hikers) were having difficulty with this easy hike up a paved trail. This paved trail does connect to the Appalachian Trail & there are signs indicating so.
It's possible to see Mount Mitchell, North Carolina from the lookout tower, but on this day the surrounding pollution layer made it too hazy. Beautiful sunset though.
On the way back to my truck, an older couple were saying they saw a bear with two cubs right off the trail. I too heard some very convincing sounds not too far away, but all I was able to see was what I thought was the top of one of their heads.
