Ascent Trip ReportA moderate trail climb to 2 peaks ...... 2.75 miles, 75 minutes RT for both peaks.
From the hwy intersection of hwy 44/185, west of downtown Hartford, we traveled north on 185 to the north side of the mountain and the main entrance to the signed "Walcott Mountain State park" at Summit Ridge Drive. We drove .25 miles to the TH parking on the right, trail maps were available at the Bulletin Board at the TH (to the left).
TALCOTT MOUNTAIN ..... an easy climb from the TH, 1.3 miles, 30 minutes.
I followed the yellow blazed trail southbound 1.18 miles to the summit's Heublein Tower, a beautiful massive structure, I visited a number of beautiful lookouts to the west on the way up. I continued south on the rocky ridge 200 yards to the highpoint ...... just past the covered gazebo with picnic tables/old square stone structure 1913/Communication Tower. I chose my spot at a large rock, GPS 41.82380, 72.79873, 1.3 miles from the TH.
For the descent I decided to take a short detour over King Philip Mountain.
KING PHILIP MOUNTAIN ...... an easy climb from Talcott and descend to TH, 1.45 miles, 45 minutes.
From the summit of Talcott Mountain I took the blue blazed trail northbound to the rocky summit ridge of King Philip Mountain. I didn't have any data with me so my plan was to identify the highpoint. I walked to the very north end of the rocky ridge to where it starts its descent, then walked back south about 300-400 yards to my chosen spot, a bump in a wooded area .... my GPS read 41.82962, 72.79767. This spot is estimated at .45 miles from the Talcott summit.
I descended by bushwacking west to the yellow blazed trail then northbound to the TH, about 1 mile.
NB: These two hikes are best done after foliage, the views will be awesome in all directions.
"THERE WAS THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF THEM, MAYBE EVEN HUNDREDS." ..... Canadian saying for a small crowd.
