Ascent Trip ReportDirections: Take Nevada Hwy 278 south from Interstate-80 at Carlin (Exit-279). Just passed Milemarker 67 look for an unsigned gravel road heading east, this is Trout Springs Forest Service Rd. Follow for about three miles keeping right at all forks to the junction with the south fork of Trout Creek. I parked here and proceeded cross country to the southeast crossing Trout creek and a couple fencelines enroute to the Smith Creek Basin at 6600ft. (According to the topo maps it appears Trout Creek road ends up a couple hundred feet from the summit after winding around from the north).
At Smith Creek Basin directly ahead is a rocky ridgeline that you need to ascend (point 7779), from there travel south along the ridgeline or sidehill over a talus field to the saddle at 8200ft. At the saddle is a dirt road that ends up on the summit. This is an
open country route with scattered trees and some ups and downs so the summit objective is not always in sight. There is a glass jar summit registry. A sedan may be able to travel for a couple of miles on Trout Creek Road but I recommmend high clearance.
Note: There is a lot of private property off of Hwy 278, it seems like the Tomera Ranch owns most of the land on both sides, so I am unaware of any other routes to the mountain.
