Ascent Trip Report

***Private Backpacking Trip***
This peak was done along with McKinley Mountain, Santa Cruz Peak, and San Rafael Mtn (The Big 3) on a 3 day/2 night backpacking Trip.

On Day 1 we packed in from Cachuma Saddle trailhead for 8.25 to McKinley Spring Campground. On our way to camp we stopped along the way to get Cachuma Mtn, then packed up to camp and set up our tents. After getting settled we headed out to get McKinley Mtn. The trail from Cachuma Saddle to camp is a fire road in great shape; minor cross country to get Cachuma and McKinley. The weather was cool and windy. Very heavy condensation/light rain overnight. Mileage and gain for day: 11.6 miles, 4,000' gain.

Day 2 we hiked from camp to Santa Cruz Peak and back. Trail was mostly an old jeep road and fire breaks. The last portion to summit was a well defined use trail, well ducked when crossing rock. Weather was cool with occasional cold wind gusts, partly cloudy skies. Mileage and gain for day: 10.0 miles, 4,700' gain.

Day 3 we woke and hiked to San Rafael Mtn, returned to camp to pack up and then headed out. The trail to San Rafael was well marked. Weather was warmer than previous days, but still pleasant with occasional light breezes. Mileage and gain for day: 13.3 miles, 1,600' gain.
