Ascent Trip ReportTohakum was a tough climb for me. It took me over 10 hours.
I approached Tohakum from NV 447 and virtual mile plost 41.5. If coming from the south and Nixon, you exit the Indian Reservation and then re-enter it. The second time you exit the reservation turn left in about 100 yds on a gravel road. This is just before you get to Needle Rock. Go about 100 yds and go through a barb wire gate. This road really doesn't go anywhere, but it gets your vehicle off the highway. I parked after about .5 mile and hiked from there.
I hiked west, cross country towards point 5507 on the topo. Once at 5507, I continued up the ridge to about 6600 ft and then turned south west along the east side of the ridge. I found a place to easily cross over the ridge and kept following it on the west side to a broad saddle at about 6780 ft elevation. From there it is easy to continue following the ridge towards the summit past points 7231 and 7631. As you approach point 7965 it is best to get off the ridge and onto the west slope. The top of the ridge kind of ends at a 100 ft cliffy area that drops down to the final saddle before going back up to the true summit. Going up I went over this cliffy area and down climbed to the saddle, but I was using thorn bushes for belays the final 25ft. The final climb up to the summit is kind of steep but the footing is good. Great views of Pyramid Lake and all northwest NV.
Climbing up Tohakum, I started having leg cramps about half way up the first part of the climb from where I parked up to the ridgeline at 6,600 ft. These leg cramps dogged me the entire rest of the climb going up AND down. I had to go quite slow to keep the cramps to a minimum. I kept hydrating and taking GU and Shot Bloks, but the cramps kept coming back. Bad day in the mountains I guess. I probably didn't hydrate adequately the previous day.
Also, during the climb, whenever I stopped for a breather, I had to flick ticks off my clothing. I think I flicked off 15-20 of the little suckers during the climb. When I got back to the truck, I found 7 of them on my legs and I quickly disposed of those nasty bugs. I hate ticks...
