Ascent Trip ReportA rough woods road and bushwack from the north side Lac Tourbillon .....4.8km. 2 hour RT.
After enjoying the Quebec City panorama from L'Ile d'Orleans we found our way to Hwy 73 north, exit 157 and drove east on Boulevard du Lac 4.3km to the stop light at a main intersection in Lac Beauport. This is the start of Chemin du Tour du lac, one can go either left or straight for a loop drive around the Lake. We chose to go left around the north side of the Lake for 3.75km to a left (east) on Chemin de la Traverse de Laval, 1km to a right on Chemin de la Savane, then .7km to the TH parking on the right at the west end of Lac Tourbillon (just around a left bend on the road and before a small creek). The summit is to the south.
Here again I used Gabriel Couet's TR of July 2010 in my source of information.
I left the TH on a rough woods road (with ATV tracks, very rough in places) as it climbs up the valley in a southwesterly direction for .8km, stay left at the fork. The rough road continues to climb/wind/zig-zags its way to a small clearing in another .8km. .... first generally south then northeast for the last bit.
A herd path leaves the small clearing at the right (east) side, look for orange flag tape blazes. I followed the herd path east for a .15km to a left-right woods track, turned right and followed the track southwest perhaps .2km to a height-of-land and the start of my bushwack.
I bushwacked (up a steep embankment) in a southeasterly direction in moderately-open mixed woods (lot of evergreen at the start), my plan was to hit the ridge then turn south to the summit. After perhaps .15km I came upon a blue blazed (flag tape) faint herd path going in a southerly direction towards the summit. Gabriel talks about a blue flags so I was confident that this path would lead me to the summit. I was there in short order (maybe .3km), the obvious summit is heavily wooded with a large rock and no views.
The blue blazed herd path continues down the other side, so my guess is that this herd path covers the 3 summits on this ridge.
I found the black PVC pipe canister on a tree "Montagne des Trois Sommets, 1876', 46 56 613, 71 14 896, #200301". I signed the register and checked out Gabriel's entry in the book dated July 2010. There has been about 30 entries since July 2010, so its evident that this is a popular destination in spite of lack-of-a-trail and views. Many thanks to the people who put-up/maintain the canister.
I took my GPS reading at the summit's large rock as 46.94363, 71.24846.
