Ascent Trip Report

An easy trail/cross country stroll ..... 1.2km, 40 minutes RT, including the stomping around.

I used Gabriel Couet TR of 2010 in my source of information. I had the pleasure of sitting in my van with my foot on the gas pedal whereas Gabriel had to spin his bike up the hill to the high ground all the way from Quebec City ..... one tough dude.

We left L'Ancienne Lorette after watching our Grandaughter, Holly, win her hockey game 2-1. She would end up winning all of her games except for the final, losing by a goal. We traveled east on Hwy 40 to exit 325, at the bottom of the ramp turned right, and drove the bridge over the Iles d'Orleans Channel southeast up Rte Prevost 6km to the crest of the road. Parked the car on the side of the road, the highpoint is to the north behind the houses. The drive over the bridge and the crest of the road gives-one an outstanding panorama (perhaps the best one) of Quebec City/Montmorency/Levis area.

I inquired at house #487 (west side) just before the crest of the road for access to their backyard. The spandex clad Christian Levesque was getting his car ready for a bike ride with his wife, "The Island is too dangerous for the bike so we go elsewhere". The friendly gentleman walked me to the woods behind his back yard and a trail headed for the high ground. He has no problem with me using his yard as a trail access, I thanked him and wished him well on his bike ride.

I walked north on the trail, in an open deciduous forest, to a large open cultivated field, about 200 yards from Rte Prevost. I turned left along the edge of the field 40 yards to the obvious north-south ridge. I walked both directions of the ridge looking for the high ground, towards the north end (abt 200 yards from the woods) I crossed the gravel lane used by Gabriel (PB coordinates puts the spot in this area). I agree with Gabriel that the high ground is south of this gravel lane, perhaps 100 yards, my GPS at this spot read 46.86283, 71.07583.

I found another spot that could contend for the high ground, located further south on the ridge about 100 yards just inside the woods at 3 tall trees. My GPS read 46.86216, 71.071004.

One needs a good eye level to better identify the high ground. It should be noted that after years of working the fields and with all the wind/rain erosion the ground elevation has probably changed. We moved on to the Quebec CoHP.
