Ascent Trip Report

A road/trail walk ..... 400yards, 15 minutes RT.

From the intersection of hwy #110/#25 in South Huntington, drive west on #25 for .5 miles to a left on West Hills Road, 1.1 miles right turn on Reservoir Road, .62 miles to its dead end. Parked here, this was my TH, the summit is to the left (west).

I hiked west up the asphalted road 150 yards to the Water/Communication Towers then continued 50 yards on the trail to the summit ....... a log-fence with 2 benches and a large rock with a plaque "Paumanok, a poem by Walt Whitman from his collection Leaves of Grass". This is definitely a quiet place to just sit and enjoy the moment. Long Island's 125 mile hiking trail "Paumanok Path" goes over this summit.

On the drive into the park on Reservoir Road, the posted sign reads "Jaynes Hill is the highest spot on Long Island, at 401 feet above sea level." Walt Whitman's birthplace is near-by and open to the public.

"TO SIT IN THE SHADE ON A FINE DAY AND LOOK UPON THE VERDURE IS THE MOST PERFECT REFRESHMENT."
