Ascent Trip ReportSo, I decided to go for a hike after work, and looking at the weather for the week and realizing that it is May, I figured today was my last chance to bag Sheephole for the season. I was out the gate from the base by 4pm and pulled into the trailhead at the pass and was hiking by 4:30. I parked right at the radio tower and followed DPS Route B. I followed the obvious drainage that heads southeast towards the heart of the Sheephole Mountains. The route is very obvious: keep hiking up until the only way to go is down. I topped out in 1 hr 40 min and relaxed on the summit for half an hour, browsing the summit register (entries back to 1983). Somebody wrote some news from 1983 in there, so I added some from 2011: Mississippi River flooding, Bin Laden dead, etc... Well, it was 6:30pm and I was on the summit, so it was time to get going. I was back at the car in 1 hr 5 min with a quick stop to retrieve a mylar balloon from some cat's claw, leaving the wilderness better than I found it. The sun dipped behind the mountain just as I came out of the gully into the flats just above the radio tower. You could probably get a car up to here, which is the official bottom of DPS route B, but it only saves 1/3 of a mile or so compared to just parking at the radio tower. Perfect timing for sunlight, wish I had more time up top to wander the ridge south of the summit - probably rarely visited. I'll go back. I live 30 minutes away... Pictures
