Ascent Trip Report

We had spent most of the day on the island of Andros, visiting a friend and making an ascent of Oros Petalon (Profitis Ilias).

On our return to the mainland, the Satnav got us to the intended trailhead (N38.07904 E23.88169, 1090m) although its routing data was missing some of the upper part of the route so we just followed the paved road which leads to the (open) gate of the military base - now disused. Just outside the gate is a flight of concrete steps. These lead after about 20m ascent to a broken-down fence with a locked church, a trig pillar and cairn (N38.08148 E23.88242, 1091m) with a rock outcrop a few metres to the northwest (N38.08152 E23.88240, 1094m) appearing equal in height with the trig. The weather was drizzly with low cloud, although the drive up gives impressive views across Athens.

We then made an unsuccessful attempt on Karambola - another military base - decidely active.
