Ascent Trip Report

Sign on the summit says 6391, and the contour says it's at least 6360.

From the ranger station at Stepps Gap (el. 6100), follow the Old Mitchell Trail (yellow blazes) north about a quarter mile, eventually passing through an patch of dead firs. Just as you re-enter the live trees, you leave the trail and head uphill about 5 minutes to the summit. When I visited, there were several blue flags marking the start of the bushwhack, but I was looking for an S-turn described on the SB6K website and I overshot it by a few hundred yards. Still, the round trip was just 42 minutes.

This was the last of four 6,000-footers, and my return distance includes 1.7 miles walking along NC 128 down to my car.

The four-peak loop was 6.5 miles with 1500 feet of gain. See Potato Knob, Clingmans Peak, and Mount Gibbes for previous segments.
