Ascent Trip Report

Our honeymoon started with a long flight to Seattle. A few days later we met with Westinghouse friends Pete and Daryl at the Timberline Lodge in the PM of June 9. Some beer and dinner and very early turn in. Up at 11:30 and at midnight we entered the snow cat that Daryl arranged. The snow cat dropped us off at the top of Palmer's ski lift.
Hiked in the firm summer snow to the bottom of the Hogsback snow ridge. The sulphur smell was following us. Put on crampons and roped up and started up the Hogsback. At this time of the night, only a group of two climbers were ahead of us. The schrund was easy this year and we just climbed around it and the up a fairly step part to The Pearly Gates. Wonderful mushroom ice. Stood on top of Oregon at sunrise at around 6 am. Gave a warm feeling. The other group and we were the only six on the small summit.
On the way down, we met those that started later and we saw some examples of climbers that weren't used to ropes and crampons. It was a bit congested at the schrund and up/down the Hogsback.

I got a remarkable picture from the Pearly Gates with clouds covering the valley and the sun behind the mountain giving a triangular shaped shadow on the clouds.

We didn't have the snow cat on the way down and had to hike all the way back to the Lodge. State highpoint #35 in the bag after a honeymoon night hike with Pete and Daryl.
