Ascent Trip Report

We climbed this the day after our Kefalonia visit which had finished with an ascent of Merovougli. We were off the ferry around 9pm then drove E along the coast before finding our way (thanks Mr Garmin!) to the Killini trailhead.

We'd parked for the night at the start of the dirt road at N37.95288 E22.42773, 1632m, NE of the summit, so we hiked from there. However, for the circuit we followed, a more convenient parking spot would have been a little closer in, at N37.94982 E22.41940, 1774m. We hiked the wide dirt road W then N, then turned W across country, passing a farm at about N37.95448 E22.41380 then heading up easy steep ground, reaching the NE ridge at N37.95441 E22.40387, 1886m. Heading up the broad ridge we passed a cylindrical trig pillar at N37.95073 E22.39922, 2170m. The ridge now turned S and levelled off for a while. Ahead was a steepish slope of firm snow (we were quite early in the season, as was confirmed during a tough ascent of Laikoura (Parnassos) a few days earlier. It was time to put on crampons although we might have managed without if necessary. We crossed a nice snowy top at N37.94644 E22.39789, 2260m, P18m, descended to a saddle then made a short steep ascent (would have been difficult without crampons). Crossing another minor summit (N37.94480 E22.39740, 2273m) we continued S along the broad ridge, crossing the N top (N37.94021 E22.39657, 2368m) then in a few metres were at the summit (N37.93906 E22.39583, 2370m). The summit trig was, unusually, octagonal; there's also a shelter cairn.

After enjoying the view and the obligatory cookies, we headed back N along the ridge. On returning to the saddle at N37.94557 E22.39759 (2238m) we decided to take a shortcut, heading straight down the snow slope (due E). The snow was soft and perfect for a sitting glissade - we were most of the way down in a few minutes, then an easy descent led to some farm sheds, then we were soon on the dirt road and strolling back to the car in warm sunshine. A nice 3h45 circuit on a lovely morning.

We were now headed south, aiming to climb Óros Taigetos the next morning. However it was not yet midday and our immediate sights were set on Saitas, a short drive south.
